I am a retired organ builder with health issues now disposing of my ‘organ junk’ via my wife’s Ebay account.

This auction lot is for a 20-note paper roll operated street organ using the popular type of rolls used on Raffin, Fussels and similar instruments.  IT NEEDS WORK  to make it into a satisfactory musical instrument.

Around 30 years ago as a part-time business I was commissioned to build two very similar instruments to this one.  This was in the early days of B.O.G.A. when there were few instruments of this type in Britain.  I was the cheapest on the market selling them for 900 each with no trolley and no music rolls.  Both of the customers were delighted with their instruments and one has gone on to have several subsequent owners.

This instrument is unfortunately another matter entirely.  I became full-time self employed about 17 years ago doing a number of different things mainly related to organs and decided to build another street organ.  This one was built in 2004 and it was never satisfactory.  You will see from the photos that my craft skills are good but this organ always lacked wind so it never played adequately.  As I had to spend my time earning a living it was eventually shelved until age and ill-health caused me to retire.  This is as far as I go with it so it is now up for sale to anyone with suitable craft skills who wants to take it on.  I have nothing more to give to this project.  I am selling the organ, its trolley and one roll of music.

If you type ”  really bad street organ 1  ” into YouTube you can see just how it plays.  The ‘hum’ in the background is a small noisy electric blower of the blow-up air-bed/rubber dinghy/inflatable Father Christmas type.  When run on mains voltage it gives adequate wind pressure to assist the organ bellows and provide sufficient wind to get a tune out of the organ.  A foot-pump seems to work too.  (The organ operates at a pressure of about 5″ WG.   Without assistance the bellows are inadequate to maintain a tune.  The organ seems to have kept its tune well over the last 17 years but I note from the video that the tracking sometimes seems slightly ‘off’.  Maybe it was just the music roll but it may need slight adjustment.  Due to its inadequacies it is listed as “for parts or not working”.

Even though it is technically a ‘new build’ it is 16 years old so I am starting the auction at 300.  This is cheaper than people charge when selling organ cases in which are hidden CD players playing street organ music.

PLEASE NOTE  that I am not offering any money-back guarantee, assistance or further advice regarding work on this instrument.  It is for sale ‘as is’ on a non-return basis and will require someone with talent and considerable patience.  Due to the clean lines of the case my instruments are not particularly easy to work on, dismantle or re-assemble.
