Wurlitzer Piano
I bought this in 1988 and it was in a bit of a state as it had been used on a world tour with Demis Roussos in the early 80’s and then stored for a couple of years until I bought it. It had the usual ciggarette burns on a couple of the keys, someone had added a switch to turn the speakers on and off, a big soldering iorn burn on the inside of the lid, broken and missing reeds or tines? and the amp didn’t work. I did some cosmetic work, cleaned it up and covered the holes in the lid as best I could and then I took it to a company in London who specialised in the service and repair of these type of electric pianos. They fixed the amplifier, replaced some broken reeds and tuned it all up, a full service and repair that I remember costing a bit, but I was very pleased with the work they did.
I never did learn to play it as I took a job abroad for 8 years very soon after it was repaired, so the piano was pallet wrapped and carefully stored at my parents various houses over this period. When I came back to work in the UK I was also moving about a bit over the years and this has followed me to every address, but I’ve never had it set up to play it in any of them. I’ve recently had to get it out of my parents house where it’s been stored for the past 6 years or so and I’ve decided it’s for sale as I doubt I’ll get the chance to enoy it in the near future.
I’ve hoovered off the dust and gave it a wipe down, plugged it in and everything is still working; the amp and speakers are sounding very nice, Volume and Vibrato controls are working fine with no crackles during adjustment, Aux output and level control are working, headphone socket is working, the original pedal is working, original legs are solid, I have pressed every key and they all work and it still sounds like it is in tune to me, but do bear in mind I’m not much of a player and its last service was 30 years ago, so even though it all works and sounds fine to me, you might want to have it serviced. I believe the servicing of these is actually a lot easier than it was for me in the late 80’s, at that time the company I took it to were the only people in the UK that could do it.
