Knight – K20 SlimlineUpright Piano

The Knight Company was founded in 1936 by Alfred E. Knight, a man who dedicated his life to producing pianos of exceptional tone and quality. Alfred followed his family’s occupation and began his career as an apprentice at just 14 years old. In 1923, at only 24 years old, Alfred was appointed as a junior director at Cremona Ltd, a position he held for 8 years before he left to begin building his own business in 1931. The Knight Company quickly grew to be one of Britain’s most recognised manufacturers of fine, high-quality pianos. Owing to unique designs, these instruments are famous for being extremely well-made, with only top quality materials used in their construction.  The K20 is one of the smaller models from Knight’s range of upright pianos. It is in essence the ‘little brother’ of the K10, being just 6cm shorter in height.

The strings in these modern instruments, built by Knight, are designed to cross over each other at a much greater angle than can usually be achieved in an upright piano. This allows these uprights to match the tone and volume of much larger pianos, despite their comparative small size.

All Knight frames were built on the girder principle, which reportedly has twice the strength of frames fitted to the average piano. This extra strength also allowed Knight to dispense the brace bar in the treble section, which claimed to have eliminated the “bad notes”, which normally occur on each side. The frame is anchored to a four post quarter sawn hardwood back, with the soundboard secured between it and the iron frame. This exceptionally sturdy method ensures superior tuning stability and strength.

This Knight K20 is housed in the ‘Slimline’ cabinet, in which Knight took inspiration from Scandinavian furnishing designs to create. It is styled to conform with the modern and contemporary home and fits well into a wide range of decors. This K20, finished in Burmese figured teak, has been very well maintained throughout its life, by the original owners who purchased the piano brand-new in 1978.

This example boasts a full 88 note keyboard, three quarter length music desk and celeste pedal; in addition to a superb quality of sound with a bright, clear tone and wide dynamic range.Like the K10, the K20 is very capable of meeting the demands of discerning pianists through its high level of performance; which is why these pianos have remained a popular and well sought-after choice for pianists of all abilities.
