Allen organ, two manuals & pedals (61 & 32 notes), internal speakers only. Condition is Used. Collection in person only from Buckfast, Devon.
Selling this as have replaced with separate 3-manual Hauptwerk installation. The stop list is evident from the pictures of the stop tabs, and the original owner’s manual is available with the instrument.
Please note:
1) All manual and pedal keys are working;
2) The organ was serviced by an Allen representative in 2017; the main power unit was replaced at this time, and key/pedal contacts were adjusted/cleaned as necessary;
3) Another service would be necessary now to address two issues: one, tone generation on the Great division is grainy (i.e. lacking tonal focus); two, when the organ has not been played for a while, there are intermittent ciphers (they do not adversely affect playing, but are a nuisance, obviously) which are accompanied by a ‘pop’ in the speakers;
4) Any prospective purchaser should bear in mind that this organ dates from the early 1970s and so is tonally incomparable to modern day digital equivalents; obviously it has no MIDI interface, but the hardware (keys, key-contacts, stop-tabs etc) could be re-used;
5) It is an excellent practice organ, but would most likely be unsuitable for musically-discerning public use. This would be an ideal instrument for technique as it unforgiving;
6) The organ has limited polyphony, which is a standard feature of such instruments from this era. It will play classical repertoire perfectly well, but will not produce all tones in a huge cluster chord (e.g. the final chord of Alain ‘Litanies’ is probably about its limit).
7) The starting price is fixed to cover my initial purchase cost and the subsequent service cost – I am only interested in covering those costs rather than looking for an unreasonable profit.
The organ is currently three minutes’ drive off the Buckfastleigh/Totnes exit of the A30 in Devon, on the outskirts of Dartmoor. Road and removals access to the ground floor room where the organ is situated is very good. The dimensions are standard for this kind of instrument, but please be aware that it is HEAVY. Anybody coming to collect it would need at least two strong people, and, ideally, a van with a tail-lift rated to lift an item of very heavy furniture. Regrettably, no help can be offered to move the instrument on site. Naturally, the pedalboard is detachable, and I have removed the brass screws of the top of the organ unit that supports the music desk: removing this reduces the overall weight in transit. The stool contains storage.
As a piece of furniture (visually) it is only in relatively ok condition – there is some cosmetic damage to the wooden cabinet and in the stool commensurate with an instrument of this age. Anyone interested would be able to polish out and repair as necessary.
Please would any prospective buyers make themselves fully aware of the above.
