Bluthner Grand Piano

This beautiful Bluthner grand piano is late Victorian, from between 1895 and 1896.

It has a beautiful tone. Despite the fact that the piano is over 100 years old and has a small crack in the soundboard, the structure of the soundboard is solid and the crack has no impact whatsoever. (See also professional opinions below*).

In both the opinion of a professional pianist and of our piano tuner, the piano has a beautiful tone and sounds better than many other higher priced pianos.

There is a myth still around that a piano is ruined if it has cracks in the sound board. The Steinway people did a test on this. They made a piano with a quarter inch “crack” in it. The cross ribs were tight and normal. When they tested it with Db meters, they found that the piano with a “crack” in it did just as well as a new piano with a perfect sound board.

As long as the structure of the soundboard remains solid, with ribs and bridges adhering correctly to the surface of the soundboard, and all strings and other fasteners attached rigidly to the frame of the piano, cracks will have very little impact on the overall sound.With proper maintenance and tuning, even a soundboard with cracks can be maintained for years.
