Broadwood Barless Grand Piano A Unique arts and crafts Grand piano designed by Edwin Lutyens. Circa 1905. 76 style 5
This particular Broadwood is probably the prettiest of the few known surviving Lutyens designs one of which is owned, but not displayed, by the Victoria and AlbertMuseum. The oak casework on this example is a beautiful honey colour, with the effective curve of the right flank displaying most attractive panelling (other Lutyens designs tend to be a straight line here).
The simple, yet elegant, legs of the piano echo extended versions of the legs to Lutyens Napoleon Chair, proving the provenance to this pianos designer.
Expert Restoration
The Broadwood has been sympathetically restored to a recital standard, whilst retaining the original character of the instrument, by Cambridge Pianoforte over a period of 2 years.A history.
On 4th August 1905, at his home of Buckhurst Park in Sussex Mr. Robert Henry Benson (of bankers Kleinwort & Benson) took delivery of a John Broadwood & Sons No.5 Steel BarlessOverstrung Drawing room Grand Piano in fine fumed oak casework.
In 1899, Robert Benson had taken out a 21 year lease on Buckhurst Park from the De La Warr family with the stipulation that he was free to make alterations to the property. To this end, Benson appointed the services of a fellow London club member Mr Edwin Lutyens, to design the alterations to Buckhurst Park. These alterations included the addition of a new music room.Lutyens had collaborated with Broadwood on several instruments, some of which were on display at the Paris Exposition of 1910. Therefore, it was only natural that the piano chosen to grace the new music room at Buckhurst Park should have its casework specifically designed and built by the same gentleman to have originally created the room. The two would work in perfect harmony
