This auction is for a fully-restored early square piano made by John Broadwood & Sons. I have relisted this piano as the previous listing did not permit international bids, and most of the interest came from outside the UK.The estimated date of manufacture is 1825.The piano has been fully-restored and is fully functional, although it needs a tune and some minor adjustments to the action as a result of the new felts and leathers bedding in following restoration. As part of the restoration, all the felts, leather and vellum hinges were replaced; the piano was fully restrung, and the casework was fully re-polished with French polish. No expense was spared during the restoration, and even the tuning (wrest) pins were made by a specialist blacksmith to the original pattern. At some time in the distant past the legs were replaced: I believe this was a common occurrence, possibly during the late nineteenth century, when the original four pairs of thinner legs were replaced with four single fatter ones. However, these match the piano perfectly. The piano is completely woodworm free. The only damage is a small chip on the front of one of the key coverings, which are otherwise in excellent condition. The piano was restored about 10 years ago, and has one or two very small marks on the top, although these are barely noticeable and certainly would not show up in photos.
Points worthy of note can be found below:
1) On one of the top notes the hammer sticks on the back of the top bridge. This is a trivial problem to fix and is purely due to the fact that the top few keys are in a block that can be removed separately. Therefore, you can simply move them slightly forward, which will fix the problem. This is not actually a fault with the piano: this will always have been the case.
2) The damper wires pass between the strings, and I have noticed that several touch the strings slightly, resulting in a slight buzzing sound when playing some of the notes. Again, small adjustments once the piano has been shipped will fix this problem.
3) The screws on the board that sits over the action (just to the back of the hammers) were corroded, and some broke off. This resulted in replacement screws and holes being necessary (see photo).
4) A lot of the key coverings were replaced, and a yellow dye was used to match them to the originals. This worked very well, although some of the yellow dye has gone on to the wood behind the key coverings. This can be removed, but I have simply not gone about getting it done.
I have uploaded a video on YouTube to demonstrate what the piano sounds like (please see below). Note that it is not in tune.Square Piano – YouTubeVideo will open in a new windowUsing the eBay App? Paste link into a browser window:https://www.youtube.com/embed/vSXbhyzz2-I?rel=0
