For sale is my grand piano by John Broadwood and Son London. It is a 19th century Drawing Room Grand with a serial number of 21264. This dates it to 1879 which corresponds with the label under the strings by the sound board (see photo). It was once owned by the composer Sir Julius Benedict (1804-1885) see youtube / wikipedia. It measures 8 feet 3 inches long x 4 feet 8 inches wide and has 85 keys. I purchased the piano in the mid 1980s from The Caldecott School near Ashford in Kent, which I believe used to be the home of the film producer John Brabourne. It has apparently been played by many well known celebrities including Noel Coward and Edgar Wallace.
The condition of the piano is overall very good although one side of the case has faded over time by being exposed to sunlight. The action is quite a heavy one as it is an old English action and could do with regulating and tuning. There are a few bits of wear and tear to the wood work in certain places which I have tried to show in the photos but overall the piano is in very good condition, especially for its age.
Here then is an opportunity for someone to own a beautiful looking instrument with an interesting history which could create a very interesting conversation piece for someone. The low starting price reflects the fact that the piano would benefit from some remedial restoration work although it is quite playable without.
