Needham Parlour Reed Organ. Condition is Used.Serial number 34996 approx year 1890+/-4 sets of reeds controlled by following stops (L-R)
Bass: Principal 4ft, Bass Coupler, Diapason 8ft, Viola 8ft
Effects: Vox Humana, Forte
Treble: Treble Coupler, Clarionet 8ft, Melodia 8ft, Voix Celeste 8ft Knee swells (knee operated expression levers) L: gradually engages stops up to full organ. R: operates swell shades for dynamic control.Range: 61 keys F-F Operation: Foot pump (suction)This organ was originally a “parlour top” instrument, meaning there would have been a decorative top half almost doubling the height. Sadly this was separated when the organ went into a Chapel.
The organ was involved in an incident at some point during its life in which paint was spilled onto it, as some interior evidence shows, however no damage to reeds or mechanism occured.
The organ is in a completely original unrestored state but currently fully functioning, it has been “patched up to keep it going” many times during its Chapel years and ideally deserves a sympathetic restoration.
As with many instruments of this era it was really built to last, but certain parts wear out eventually. The bellows cloth needs replacing ideally, reeds cleaning, keys resetting, stop mechanisms all need attention and everything re-felted as minimum to really enjoy this instrument.Case requires minor comestic attention but over restoration would be a shame if it was completely refinished. For those that are new to reed organs this may be an ideal instrument for you to lovingly restore, there are lot of people out there offering parts, help and advice.
These instruments give a pleasant warm tone and are very evocative of the Victorian era. At one time there were more organs being produced for domestic use than pianos. This organ is registered with the Reed Organ Society (ROS reg no 4266) and has a certificate.I would ideally like to see it go to a good home where it will be appreciated as a musical instrument and not turned into a drinks cabinet or writing desk!Unfortunately there is no stool available with this organ.Buyer to collect.
