Original Antique Church Pipe Organ – early 1900.Was fully working up until church closed recently.
Buyer to collect and dismantle please. Size / Measurements at end of description.
Pipe Organ by Hele & Company, PlymouthThe organ was professionally assessed when the church was closed.
The following information are the findings of the assessor: “The organ was installed when the church opened in 1905/06. It is of a relatively small footprint for a pipe organ with reasonable versatility for its size: bright and bold enough to lead hearty singing from a small congregation, but the significant variety of softer voices to support a reasonable chunk of the solo organ repertoire. Fundamentally this is a hymn machine, with potential for careful enlargement which could make a thoroghly useful, long-lasting, versatile instrument. It has a positive longevity – for comparatively modest outlay for restoration, it would outlive any pipeless alternative by several decades. The instrument has a two-manual of 10 speaking stops. The organ stands at floor level in its own chamber on the south side of the chancel. Sound egress was intended to the west and north. The organ has a light, responsive, pneumatic action. The keys and pedalboard are in excellent condition. most notes worked, although there are some missing notes on the Pedal Bourdon. It is voiced in the late-Romantic, British style and has several attractive voices. The organ was last overhauled in 1986 by Tony Cawston of Cam, Gloucestershire. Its stoplist:GREAT: Open Diapason (8′), Claribel Flute (8′), Dulciana (8′), Harmonic Flute (4′)SWELL: (enclosed): Violin Diapason (8′), Lieblich Gedackt (8′), Gemshorn (4′), Piccolo (2′), Oboe (8′), TremulantPEDAL: Bourdon (16′)Swell to Great, Great to Pedal, Swell to Pedal; ‘hitch down’ swell pedal; two combination pedals each to Great & Swell”
From what we can see, the organ appears to have been cared for with inspection taking place in 2014, prior overhauling in 1986. For some provenance there is a little notebook which details the care of the organ and also the songs played by the organist which is a nice extra to appreciate its personal history.
We are reluctant for the organ to be broken up however, in those terms, it has an excellent keyboard of rare design, excellent pedal-board, some noteworthy individual ranks of pipes.
With the organ in situ, it is difficult to access the Organ Chamber to inspect the pipework and mechanism. The organ frontage and console can be clearly seen though in photographs. It is a lovely example of a pipe organ.
Buyer would be responsible for dismantling and removing the organ from the former church.
The approximate measurements of the organ are (measured in inches):
Widths:The front is about 9ft wide (around 270cm)The front face (excluding side recess of pipes) is 58 inches (about 150cm)Side rack of pipes each at 27 inches (about 70cm)
Depth:Depth of organ from front to back is 104 inches (265cm)
