Welcome to my piano sales. All my pianos have been overhauled which means the following.
1. All dust has been removed from inside. This process has to be done very carefully and can take up to half a day. It is impossible to overhaul a piano if the dust isn’t removed first. If there is a large quantity of dust inside a piano it means it has never been overhauled.
2. All the strings have been lubricated to prevent future corrosion and to lessen the risk of the strings snapping during tuning. It is almost impossible to tune an old piano to concert pitch, safely, without carrying out this procedure.
3. All the tuning pin holes have been injected to lessen the risk of “loose pin disease”, which makes most old pianos almost useless.
4. The action has been repaired and regulated so that the piano plays properly.
5. All the hammers have been re-shaped, if they were worn, and then re-voiced.
6. The piano has been tuned several times until it is up to concert pitch.
7. All the keys have been removed and cleaned and repaired, if necessary and then polished.
8. The pedals have been put into good working order and the casters oiled.
9. The sound-board and bridges have been checked and any cracks repaired.
10. Any major damage to the case has been repaired and the piano cleaned and polished.
Please note; a piano that has been overhauled is still a “used” piano. For it to count as “seller refurbished”, it has to have had all the strings and tuning pins replaced and all the hammers and action felts and leathers replaced and the case re-finished. This costs several thousand pounds.
This week I have a nice looking and sounding Collard&Collard made in London in around 1912. It is veneered in walnut with boxwood stringing to the panels and finished in a dark french polish which has faded over the years to an attractive honey colour. The music rest, which is solid walnut, has cast a slight shadow on the wood behind it. There are a few places where small pieces of veneer have flicked off, through wear, but they hardly notice. Please see photos. The ivories are all original and have never flicked off and there is no yellowing. Eight of them had a small chip at the front but these have all been filled and hardly notice. It has got a huge pierced cast iron frame for excellent tuning stability and is tuned to concert pitch and plays with a light to medium touch.
Inside, a lot of work has been done to put it into perfect working order. All the tapes have been replaced as have all the check leathers and all the damper felts have been renewed and all the hammers re-shaped and re-voiced. So this piano is set up for years of service. It has got a surprising lot of volume and sounds like a grand piano. If you want a little quiet piano to tinkle on in the corner of the room then this isn’t the one. It has a very nice bright, fruity tone. I can heartily recommend this piano and it would meet the requirements to grade 8.

Contrary to popular belief, good pianos do not need re-tuning after being moved. Bad pianos do.
