This is my 1894 Pleyel Piano with a Satinwood case, and the entire cabinet inlaid in a Neoclassical design in different coloured woods, with bows, swags, flowers and acanthus.

The piano wonderfully represents the pinnacle of the French ‘Belle Epoque’ and is a joy to behold. The Satinwood case has an almost three dimensional quality that seems to shimmer in the light, and the marquetry on all sides is breathtaking in detail. The fluted legs and sides are beautifully made. It would have been a custom made order from the Pleyel factory, with the work contracted to a specialist cabinet maker.

The piano serial number dates it to 1894, but there is also a stamp inside that reads London 1938, and I suspect it was restored and re-polished then. The French polish finish is in excellent condition, with just a few slightly darker marks on the top.

There are 2 music stands, a large foldaway one inside, and also a useful smaller one at the front. The piano plays very responsively. It is tuned to concert pitch, and holds it’s tuning well.

Pianos of this quality are hard to find, and it really is a reluctant sale as I am moving to a smaller property.
