Rank of Organ Pipes: CHIMNEY FLUTE (Rohrflute), 8ft
The organ, from a closed church in Buckley, on the outskirts of Chester, is by PETER CONACHER (Huddersfield) and both the pipework and organ are of excellent quality
Chimney flutes seem to belong to older English organs, and by the end of the 19th Century most builders had stopped making them because they were so much more expensive to manufacture. Conacher was the exception, and from time to time you do find a chimney flute on one of his Swell organs. Since the 1960s they have made a comeback.
This one is a beauty. I was able to play it before dismantling and it has that characteristic liquid chiff. It is tuned both by its enormous ears and by a canister to which the chimney is attached.
It is full compass, so 58 pipes. The bottom 2 octaves are of stopped wood; the rest are of pipe metal, with chimneys. The wooden pipes are stout and well made. with good stoppers. Thewhole things was remarkably clean as the organ was overhauled only in 2001, I didn’t take the wind pressure, but would estimate it at 3″.
My details are on the final photo, should you wish to contact me with questions. I have a surplus of pipes at the moment, including some ranks from this organ which are being listed at the moment. Do feel free to call me if you have any requests for pipework.
This rank is too heavy to be sent by carrier, so it is “collection only”. I live 5 minutes from Junction 24, M62, so quite easy to access.Just a footnote: I do get quite a few requests from private contacts outside Ebay. If one of these wants to buy any of my listed ranks of pipes, I would take them off Ebay during a listing and sell them privately. Once a bid has been placed however, I will always leave the listing to run its course. The moral of the story? – If you want an item, place a bid on it sooner rather than at the last minute.
