This piano is a very unusual example of an 1880’s Steinway. The features are as follows;
Serial number 317.
Badged on the frame as Steinway & Sons, New York, Braunschweig (as opposed to New York and Hamburg, as is usual.)
Fitted with a French-made action by F. de Rohden of Paris, in the French style with brass hammer/damper flanges (single flange for both components, as in traditional Steinway uprights.)
Tied action to lower levers in the Bechstein style, but action separates into two parts to allow hammer and damper section to be removed without disconnecting key ties.
This piano may have been some kind of prototype, or possibly produced to order as specified by a client. The Braunschweig reference on the frame casting seems likely to suggest a connection with the Grotrian factory.
Dimensions in cm are 135 high, 155 wide, 66 deep.
Rosewood casework in fair condition consistent with it’s age.
Offered with no reserve price beyond the starting price.
Collection only, from Southampton UK.
