The Yamaha YDP-S51s contemporary design sets it apart from other digital pianos with its slim form and modern appearance. However, this has been achieved without compromise; the excellent sound and response that you would expect from Yamaha is obvious from the moment you play it. For a perfect combination of form and function the YDP-S51 is an outstanding digital piano.

The sound you hear when you play the YDP-S51 is actually that of a real Yamaha concert grand piano just like those seen on stage in concert halls around the world. The sound of the piano has been digitally sampled and stored so that, for example, when you play a C on your YDP-S51, you hear the C played on the grand piano. But there’s much more to it than that. The sound of a piano changes depending on how hard you play the keys; the YDP-S51 perfectly recreates this effect as you play thanks to its touch-sensitive keyboard. Furthermore, when using the damper (or sustain) pedal, the Half-pedal function allows you to vary the sustain length depending on how far the pedal is pressed and the subtle changes in tone this creates are replicated thanks to the Damper Resonance feature. These technologies, working in harmony, mean that the quality and realism of the piano sound has to be heard to be believed.

In addition to its superb sound and realistic piano response the YDP-S51 has a wide range of other features which will enhance your playing enjoyment:

Digital Reverb is an effect which can be added to create the ambience of a stage or concert hall. This effect is fully controllable and can also be used when playing with headphones.Dual is a feature which allows the player to combine any two voices together so that, for example, you can play piano with rich strings to create a great orchestral effect.Digital Recording and Playback is a great way to analyse and track your development when learning a new song. The YDP-S51 has a built-in two track digital recorder which can record two separate tracks which can then be played back together. Voice selection, tempo and other settings can be changed after recording which makes this a very versatile feature. There are also 50 built-in classical pieces of music stored in the instrument and a music book containing the full score of each song is included. You can even listen to left and right hand parts separately to gain a better understanding of how the piece is written and performed.Duo Mode splits the keyboard into two parts and gives each player the same range of notes. This is a very useful tuition feature which enables the student to copy the teacher as if two pianos were being used.Twin headphone sockets allow two pairs of headphones to be connected simultaneously for silent practice.USB connectivity enables the YDP-142 to be linked up to a suitably equipped computer for use with a variety of commercially available music software (software & connecting leads not supplied).Transpose can be used to play in any key which is perfect for accompanying singers or other instruments. The piano also has a fine tuning facility. The built-in Metronome provides a click in perfect time to help when learning a new song. And, unlike the old-fashioned ticking metronome, you can use it with headphones while practising without disturbing others.Auto Power Off automatically turns the instrument off after 30 minutes of inactivity. This feature can be disabled if required.

Voice Name Voice Description Grand Piano 1 This sound was sampled from a full concert grand piano. It uses different samples depending on the strength of your playing and produces smoother tonal changes. Suitable not only for classical compositions but also for piano pieces of any style. Grand Piano 2 Warm and soft piano sound. Good for playing ballads Grand Piano 3 Spacious and clear piano with bright reverb. Good for popular music. E.Piano 1 An electronic piano sound created using FM synthesis. Good for popular music E.Piano 2 The sound of an electric piano with using hammer-struck ‘tines’. Soft tone when played lightly and a much more aggressive tone when played hard. Harpsichord The definitive instrument for baroque music. Since the strings of a harpsichord and plucked, there is no touch response. There is, however, a characteristic additional sound when the keys are released. Vibraphone The sound of a vibraphone played with soft mallets. The tone becomes more metallic the harder your play. Pipe Organ This is a typical pipe organ sound (8ft + 4ft + 2ft). Ideal for sacred music from the Baroque period. Jazz Organ The sound of a “tonewheel” type electric organ. Often heard in jazz and rock music. The speed of the rotary speaker effect can be switched by using the left pedal. Strings Strings Stereo sampled, large scale string ensemble with realistic reverb. Try combining this Voice with piano in the Dual mode
