The S in the model number stands for slim and the modern design sets it apart from others as this model is designed to be as space saving as possible.
It features a Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) Keyboard, meaning that the keys get progressively lighter in sections as you move up the keyboard.
It has 10 voices, including the fantastic Yamaha CFX concert grand and 192 note polyphony. Polyphony is the amount of notes that can be played at the same time. You may think that you only have 10 fingers (or most people do), whats the benefit? You need a large polyphony to ensure you get a great sound. For example, if you hold the sustain pedal down this allows more notes to be played simultaneously, ie the last notes you play continue to play until the sound fades away, or you release the pedal. Also, in order to ensure a great sound some sounds use more that one note allowance of polyphony and if you play two sounds at the same time this doubles up the notes used from a polyphony point of view.
In addition, modern technology allow digital pianos to be played using MIDI FILES. These are pre-recorded data that use note data on different tracks for different sounds (I hope I am explaining this ok). The more polyphony the piano has the better it will ultimately be!
Other Features
88 note graded hammer keyboard (GHK)
Two track recorder
2 x 20 watt amplifier
Soft close key cover
Why does it sound so good?
The piano sound you hear when you play the YDP-S52 is that of a real Yamaha concert grand piano just like those seen on stage in concert halls around the world. The sound of the piano has been digitally sampled and stored so that, for example, when you play a C on a Yamaha digital piano, you hear the C played on the grand piano. But there’s much more to it than that. The sound of a piano changes depending on how hard you play the keys; this instrument recreates this effect as you play thanks to its touch-sensitive keyboard
Why is the feel of the keyboard so important?
A piano must sound good but experienced pianists will tell you that how the keyboard reacts as you play is equally important. Some digital pianos may sound good but they do not feel and respond like an acoustic instrument. Yamahas know-how in acoustic piano manufacturing has been used to develop digital pianos with an authentic feel and response.
A wide range of sound options
The YDP-S52 has 10 high quality sounds available including three piano voices, two electric pianos, organ sounds, strings, harpsichord and vibraphone.
Unique to Yamaha, the Stereophonic Optimiser adjusts the spacing of the sound and the separation from the piano when listening via headphones, resulting in a spacious sound image that will inspire you to play for hours at a time.
Recording
The YDP-S52 has a built-in two track digital recorder which can record two separate tracks which can then be played back together. Voice selection, tempo and other settings can be changed after recording which makes this a very versatile feature.
